My Teaching Philosophy
By: Mattie Fisher
“Each person is an individual” is a statement that will always influence my teaching. I believe that every student is capable of retaining information given by an effective teacher. Establishing a rapport with students is a necessary task in this growing and diverse world of education. When the student understands the teacher and understands the objectives for completing a course the end will be a successful. I believe in a straight-forward approach but at the same time learning should be interesting. Since each person is an individual self-discovery plays a vital role in my philosophy. My goal is to always develop a curriculum around students and their interests and to motivate the students to always try their best.
Helping students from any age group realize full potential is the main reason why course objectives are so important. It goes back to my “each person is an individual statement,” because motivating is important it's always best to stay on topic with objectives and keep the straight-forward approach so that learning can take place without distractions.
For myself, teaching provides an opportunity for continuous learning and growth; besides, a teacher is a lifelong learner. My passion for the subject I teach came from a spark that my high school teacher ignited and college professors kept lit, thus inspiring me to do the same. It is important that my students understand that I am available only to help them think. It is Socrates who says: "I cannot teach anybody anything I can only make them think." This quote is one that sticks highly with me and I believe especially in writing that teaching the process is great but getting students to think and become creative is gold. In my career I will certainly establish times to think and brainstorm by providing a safe and comfortable learning environment.
In writing I know that I am being effective if my students are communicating their thoughts on paper. If their ideas are clear and concise I am effective. My goal is to have students understand the writing process and the importance of following the process. My belief is everyone has a story to tell and it is up to me to have students prepared to tell their story. Students will use their writing skills to understand that no matter their career path communication is the key factor in obtaining their goals. Throughout my career I hope that I am consciously able to make changes to my teaching philosophy as needed as times change. Teaching English Language Arts is so much more than writing and reading comprehension, it is an understanding that everything can be analyzed. Albert Einstein summed it up best when he wrote: “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”
